Day 30: What chords do I know?
I headed out to an area called North Melbourne in the afternoon. It's just north of the CBD as you can imagine. I went there to meet this guy. He was advertising online for a guitarist so I hit him up and there I was. He was a pleasant guy, slightly awkward, a little bit older - maybe late 20's. He looked aged - and I mean that in the "experienced" way, as if he'd been through some stuff rather than him looking old.
He works ungodly hours at a casino as a blackjack dealer. He saved up and he used that to record an album. That's pretty admirable stuff. DIY. I asked him about his music stuff - ambitions, plans, those sorts of things and he didn't really seem to have too much vigour although it was obvious that he would love to be able to make a living from it. It was an odd situation because I was finding myself having to lead the conversation and probe about things whereas I was thinking he would've been interested to know lots about me - after all, he wants ME to work for HIM.
We decided to sit down and listen to a couple tracks on his album. It soon became apparent to me that he's not the most musically capable guy. For example, he asked me a question that I'd never been asked seriously before, "So, what chords do you know?" I was stumped. He wrote the songs on the track, which is great but the songs weren't exactly well... my cup of tea, shall we say. It became apparent to me that despite this, he was stubborn about his songs and didn't want anyone touching them.
He said he's got a gig coming up. It's set up by a record label. I agreed on doing this show but alerted him that the chances of me being able to continue on after that was slim. I tried to let him down lightly by giving typical excuses such as, 'I don't know if I'll have the time," etc etc. It'll be interesting to see how this gig goes. His influences are 3 Doors Down and Creed to give you an example of what I'm dealing with.. (I don't think I did a good job of hiding my emotions when I heard 'Creed')
Our place is a 2.5km walk from the nearest train station. It actually turned out to be a great walk as the sun was shining but it was late enough in the evening for it to be not so hot. I haven't gotten into the nitty gritty yet but so far, Melbourne is being good to me.
Peak: The train and walk home
Pit: I was halfway home from the train station and then had to walk all the way back because I realised I'd forgotten to tag off on my transport card. Dang!
