Day 1: Orientation
My fantasies of being seated next to a beautiful Australian on the flight and striking up a great relationship came to a screeching halt when I hurried on to the plane last and saw an empty seat near the back of the plane amongst a herd of about ten Chinese men in their 50's. I only mention Chinese part, not because I don't like them, but because I had a preconceived opinion of them being a little loud and personal space invading.
A terrible generalisation, but one that proved to be right on the money or this instance at least.
I felt too relaxed on the flight for my own liking. Apart from the odd wave of excitement or hesitation, I mostly remained calm. Maybe it was to do with the fact that I got one and a half hours of sleep the night before.
Kate met me at a station and there happened to be a vacancy in the room that her and Cherri were staying in so I quickly booked into it. It was a great feeling to see two familiar faces away from home. I also met their friend Alice Courtenay. She's a funny lass. I think we'll get on.
It was as Cherri was showing me around the city that I realised how lucky I was to have them there. Flip, I wouldn't have a clue what to do if I was there on my own. She helped me get the necessities out of the way (bank, phone etc).
Alice, Kate and I went to fitzroy for dinner. Thanks to them, I ate at a vegetarian restaurant for the first time. I ordered a pizza and it was better than I was expecting. It may have been made better than it was thanks to the cute as waitress that was working there. Naaaaw. Settle down, Phil.
Overall first impression of Melbourne: I think I'll have to wait til tomorrow to make a judgment (I realise then it'd be a second impression but I feel like I didn't get to see enough today to make a call!). But the weather was Auckland weather, trams are cool cos you can be sneaky and get away with not paying for them and the accent hasn't bothered me - yet. Mind you I haven't really spoken to many Australians yet.
First night at a backpackers. It's loud! There is a blonde Swedish girl lying approximately 60cms above me but at least the facilities aren't gross.
Also, casually bumped into a guy I know from nz, lee waddingham whilst walking around today. Crazy!!

Did you go to Vege Bar in Fitzroy?! So good!! And don't try to go too long without paying for the tram... They have undercover tram patrollers who wear normal clothes and they check if you've paid and give you massive fines if you haven't! I got checked twice when I was there a couple months ago! Hope you're having fun :)
