Day 2

The day got off to a relatively slow start. We went to the state library, which is flippin' HUGE. We went there to use the free wifi to plan our road trip. The girls pretty much got everything sorted and I only had to do one thing - book a flight back to Melbourne from Brisbane, which is where our road trip comes to an end (the girls had already done this before I arrived).

So, I thought I was awesome and I booked it in and just as I clicked on 'confirm booking' one of them said, "so it's for 22nd Feb, right?"

Me: ......................................................................... WTF

I had booked my flight for the 23rd. So, currently I'm booked into staying an extra day, on my own, in Brisbane. I'm going to have to look into getting that changed. What a bum!

After that we visited a big home furniture store called IKEA (I was still fuming). We played the '500 Days of Summer' game where we walked around and lay on the couches and beds and complained that the tap wasn't working. The girls made a valiant effort at being ZD but fell well short of my lofty expectations. Gutsbo.

The highlight of IKEA was undoubtably the $2 hot dog + unlimited drink combo / $2.50 pizzas. If I can't find a job for ages I know where I'm going for lunch everyday. They also have free tea/coffee for IKEA members and it doesn't cost anything to sign up and so of course, we made good use out of that (this made me forget about the earlier mishap temporarily).

This evening, all the girls had work at the same time (they're all waitresses at different restaurants) and so I had a lot of time to kill. I decided to go for a leisurely stroll around a nearby river. It's just outside of the main CBD block and so it was uncharted territory for me. The restaurants by the river looked tres expensive (as expected) but in amongst the restaurants was a foodcourt. I got a vegetarian fried rice as I felt my health needed some attention.

I walked to the grass bank on the other side of the river to sit and enjoy my dinner in the sun. As soon as I sat down these sea gulls swooped in and perched themselves about a metre away from me. It was very intimidating. Hate birds! And these ones, I swear, have extra long necks and come closer than usual. They eventually won the battle and I moved back to the side with the restaurants. There were sea gulls there too but not as many and there were benches I could sit on so I could assert my authority over the birds by being positioned higher.

After dinner I kept strolling listening to my ipod. It was at this moment that I began to get excited about everything. I finally felt like I liked the city. Something clicked and I have no idea what it was. It's very interesting to me that it took me being alone in my own thoughts to get me to really appreciate the opportunity I have and look forward to future prospects. I don't mean this in a bad way at all but it was as if the things other people were saying to me didn't matter at all - I didn't care what other people said about how much fun I was going to have, how awesome Melbourne was, etc. It was only when I got to listen to myself that I got excited. How self-involved of me. But fact.

We went out to a club at night. We headed out at like 12am after the girls finished work. Kate Swan forgot her ID (NOOB) so we couldn't get in to the place we planned to but we got into another bar. Beers are super expensive here - even more so than Auckland. Roar.
